Georgia Window Tint Laws 2026: Legal Limits, Fines & What's Allowed

VLT (visible light transmission) measures how much light passes through the glass + film combination. Higher number = lighter tint. A 5% VLT (limo tint) lets through 5% of light. A 32% VLT lets through 32% — about as dark as Georgia allows for front side glass on any vehicle.

Georgia law splits vehicles into 'passenger cars' (sedans, coupes) and 'multipurpose passenger vehicles' (MPVs — SUVs, vans, trucks, hearses, limos). MPVs are allowed unlimited tint darkness on the rear side glass and rear window. Front side glass and the windshield strip rules apply equally.

This is why you see Tahoes and Suburbans with limo-dark rear glass everywhere in Atlanta — it is fully legal. A Camry with the same tint is not.

Georgia caps tint reflectivity at 20%. Mirror-finish films (the highly reflective metallic tints from the early 2000s) are illegal. Modern ceramic tints (Llumar IRX, 3M Crystalline, SunTek CIR) are well under the 20% reflectivity cap and are 100% legal.

Red, amber, and gold tint are banned in Georgia. Standard charcoal, neutral, and very-slightly-blue tints are legal. Stay away from anything that could be misread as a colored marker light or signal.

Georgia issues medical tint exemptions to drivers with documented light sensitivity (lupus, photosensitive porphyria, severe migraine, post-surgical eye conditions). The exemption is processed by the Georgia Department of Public Safety and requires a physician's letter. With a medical exemption you can run darker than 32% on front side glass.

Illegal tint in Georgia is a misdemeanor. First-time penalties run up to $1,000 plus court costs in some counties. Officers can write tickets for any window that does not meet the VLT or reflectivity standard, and the ticket includes a 'fix-it' clause requiring the tint to be corrected within a window of time (usually 30 days).

Repeat offenses or refusal to remove illegal tint can escalate charges. Most metro Atlanta jurisdictions enforce on probable-cause traffic stops rather than as stand-alone tint stops.
